THE PAST
OneSound is the new name of what used to be the MAYC Orchestra and Singers.
Founded in the 1974, the Methodist Association of Youth Clubs Orchestra and Singers - or MAYC O&S as it was more conveniently known - had a strong tradition of performing in huge venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, often as part of MAYC London Weekends where tens of thousands of young people came together annually. The O&S also produced albums including Shout it Out, Let Everything that has Breath (featuring Matt Redman), The Reason We Sing and, most recently, Rejoice the Lord is King, a Wesley tercentenary celebration album. Our repertoire covers light classical, pop music and worship music, as well as much loved ‘medleys’, prepared by our Musical Directors over the years and adored at the London Weekends.
As the London Weekends transformed into ‘Breakout’, the O&S maintained its strong links with the weekends, but in 2005 learnt it was to lose its funding and staffing from the Methodist Church. A long period of reflection saw the O&S successfully reach independence and become a Charitable Company under the name O&S Music.
After the various changes that the O&S had undergone, the management team and membership felt the time had come for a new branding, a new name and a new vision. In 2009 the name OneSound went live and our last concert under our old name when, was a performance of Karl Jenkins’ ‘The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace’, under the leadership of our Musical Director Matt Beckingham, in front of a sell-out Birmingham Town Hall audience.
We now look forward to exciting events in the coming years, including the recently announced weekends.
